GETTING TO THE TATRAS

By Air

The Tatras are well accessible via two international airports. Poprad International Airport is located on the southern side of the mountains. The airport in Poprad is a port of entry to the Slovak side of the High Tatras as well as to the Low and Western Tatras. The Spis and Liptov Regions are easily accessible via the motorway from the Poprad airport.

John Paul II Airport in Cracow is about two hours drive from the northern side of the High Tatras. It is a genuine gateway to the Polish side of the Tatras and Zakopane, the main Polish Tatra resort.

Train

There are two IC-train stations on the Slovak side of the Tatras. IC trains are comfortable and connect the Tatras with Bratislava, Kosice and Zilina. There are direct trains from Prague as well.

Poprad-Tatry is the center of the High Tatras and you may interchange here for the Tatra Electric Railway that brings you to Smokovce, Tatranska Lomnica and Strbske Pleso, three main Tatra resorts on the Slovak side of the Tatras.

Liptovsky Mikulas is the center of the Low Tatras; you can easily reach the Demanovska Valley (the upper part is called Jasna resort), which is well known of its excellent skiing possibilities and Demanovska caves.

The main Polish Tatra resort, Zakopane, is accessible few times a day by direct trains from Cracow and Warsaw.

Motorway

The entire Slovak side of the Tatras is well accessible via the D1 motorway that spreads from the east to the west of the valley between the High/Western and Low Tatra massifs.
